Being the Westernmost state shouldn't be too hard : a map will show that the state extends all the way to the International Date Line, farther West than Hawaii.
However, the most surprising part is that (by one definition), it is also the Easternmost state. The Aleutian Islands, which are part of Alaska, cross the 180 degree meridian. Therefore, they are the farthest East as well. (see link)

This is actually a bit of a complicated answer, because it depends on what you really mean by "in the United States." And here's why I say that: Technically, Wake Island, an unorganized, unincorporated territory of the United States is west of the International date line, and so it is 1 day ahead of what we typically think of as "the United States." Maine is the eastern most State, and Lubec is the eastern most town, making it the eastern most town in the Continental United States to see daylight. However, West Quoddy Head, which is part of Lubec, is considered the eastern most point in the Continental United States. And, of course, Point Udall in St. Croix (U.S. Virgin Islands) is the eastern most point of all the US Territories.
