Abdominal pain is a funny thing. The abdominal cavity, and the organs inside don't have any pain receptors of their own. When there is a problem, they outsource the feeling of pain to other parts of the body, usually as close to the problem as possible. This sensation of pain away from the actual trouble spot is called "Referred pain".

There are a lot of organs down there, and a lot of benign reasons to have sharp pain in that region. Here are a few parts of your abdomen and adjoining areas:

* Lymph nodes (lots!) * Gall bladder (1 on the right) * Liver (1 on the right) * Kidneys (2, one on each side) * Pancreas (1 on the right) * Spleen (1 on the left) * Female reproductive bits (multiple parts in the lower abd.) * Gastrointestinal tract (1 long one in the middle)

I, as a rule, try not to offer specific diagnostic advice. Today I have failed.

Depending on how long you have had the pain, it could be a few different things. Riddle me this:

# Has the pain been present for more than a week? # Does the pain move at all, or is it always in the same spot? # Have you had a fever? # Have you had other abdominal pain? # Do you have flank and/or Back pain, especially on the right side or on both sides, just below the level of your ribs?

My GUESS it that you have the early signs of appendicitis. The answers to the questions above, I'm THINKING are:

# No, just a few days

# Moves downward - daily or more often

# Maybe a fever, maybe not.

# Pain when pushing, or especially when releasing, on the right lower section (called rebound tenderness.)

# No flank or back pain.

If this sounds like you, I suggest you go to the emergency room TODAY.
