If it is a New Zealand bird then it is probably a moa but it depends on what you mean by tall?
Depends on how you classify tall, the time period you are interested in and how you identify "native".The Moa of New Zealand is both tall and extinct (3.6 m (12 ft) in height with neck outstretched, and weighed about 230 kg (510 lb))B. burmeisteri. extinct before moas developed, was heavier at 350–400 kg (770–880 lb) but not as tall;
i belive it is a pterosaur

Five species and two sub-species of Kiwi, the Kakapo, the Takahe, the Weka, The Auckland Island Teal, the Campbell Island Teal and six species of Penguin are all flightless birds of New Zealand.
The two largest species of Moa, Dinornis robustus and Dinornis novaezelandiae reached around 3.7m high. Both are now extinct.

The Madagascan Elephant Bird was a very tall bird that was similar to an ostrich in body shape and as tall as an elephant (11.5 feet), hence their name. They walked through the jungles of Madagascar and looked a bit scary. In fact, some people think they walked and ran just like a velocipede (a feathered dinosaur). However, they were actually very gentle birds and completely vegetarian. They ate leaves, plants and herbs in the jungle. These magnificent creatures became extinct in the 16th century due to hunting. These wonderful birds had very little defence against man, despite being bigger than man, other than either running away or swiping with their talons, which didn't help often because they were peaceful birds who never attacked anything. The last known remains of the Madagascan Elephant Bird are kept in several museums over the world.
