The most common language spoken in the U.S., and the language of the U.S. Constitution and of most government activity, is English. English is the only language spoken at home in about 80% of U.S. households and is spoken by about 95% of the population.

Spanish is the next most widely used language, spoken by about 4% of the population. French, the third highest, is spoken by about 3% of the population.

There have been several attempts to amend the Constitution to adopt English as the official language of the U.S., but as yet none have succeeded.
