Kappa Sigma is the First Fraternity in the worldTraditional founding: 1400Kappa Sigma Fraternity tradition holds that it evolved from an ancient order said to have been founded at the University of Bologna in the Middle Ages.[1][6][7] According to some accounts, the order was known as "Kirjath Sepher" and was founded between 1395 and 1400.[6][7] According to this story, the corrupt governor of the city, one-time pirate and later papal usurper Baldassare Cossa, took advantage of the students at Bologna, one ofEurope's preeminent universities which attracted students from all over the continent, by sending his men to assault and rob them; this motivated one of the university's scholars Manuel Chrysoloras to found a secret society of students beginning with five of his most devoted disciples, for mutual protection against Baldassare Cossa.[1]

There are a few ways to look at this.

The FIRST secret society created for collegiate women was Adelphean (1851), which changed it's name to Alpha Delta Phi in the early 1900's. A few years later, it changed to Alpha Delta Pi, and is a member of the NPC.

The FIRST secret society (that eventually went national) made up of Greek letters was Kappa Alpha Theta (1870). This organization is also in the NPC.

The FIRST national women's fraternity was founded as I.C. Sororsis (1867). In 1888, it became Pi Beta Phi, and is also in the NPC.

Chi Theta Delta (1856) was the FIRST women's group to bear a Greek letter name. It died out within a few years.
