∙ 8y agoThe argument is that a person should be arrested for what they do, not what they think. When hate crimes laws are taken to the extreme, they become a form of thought control. Hate crimes laws can be used as excuses to take freedom, punish certain types of speech, or turn non-crimes into crimes, and misdemeanors into felonies.
Another problem they have with such laws is that they send the message that some people are more important than others or deserve more rights. While such laws are supposed to help level the playing field, they can also be used as a weapon to oppress certain people.
