The short answer is that the Review of Literature is a report summarizing the answers to the research questions you generated in the previous assignment. It's a review of the relevant "literature" (books, magazines, Web sites) discussing the topic you want to investigate.

The long answer is that the Review of Literature discusses techniques and equipment that are appropriate for investigating your topic. And, the Review of Literature summarizes the theory behind your experiment. Science fair judges like to see that you understand why your experiment turns out the way it does. You do library and internet research so that you can make a prediction of what will occur in your experiment, and then whether that prediction is right or wrong, you will have the knowledge to understand what caused the behavior you observed.

If this sounds to you a lot like the reasons we gave for doing background research, you're right! The Review of Literature is simply the "write up" of that research.

Many science experiments can be explained using mathematics. As you write your Review of Literature, you'll want to make sure that you include as much relevant math as you understand. If a simple equation describes aspects of your project area, include it.

If you are doing an engineering or programming project that involves designing or inventing a new device, procedure, computer program, or algorithm, then be sure to check Engineering & Programming Project Tips. You should have some additional information in your Review of Literature.
A LITERATURE REVIEW is part of a research paper. It is a brief summary of what other researchers already have published on the subject.

The literature review is a necessary part of research in order to prevent researchers from 're-discovering' what others already know. Since all research is supposed to build on previous research, a well done research paper will include a literature review in order to justify why or how the current paper adds or contributes to the known body of knowledge.

Basically a literature review is conducting as much research as possible into a given topic; normally a literature review precedes and is considered a precursor to a thesis.

Normally the subject matter is extremely focused. For example you would not a a literature review on "Origins of the Second World War", as you simply would never ever be able to read all the compiled materials that have been written on the subject within your lifetime. A more likely review may be titled "Was German expansion within the Rhineland during 1938 a precursor to World War 2", again the title is more focused, although I would surmise there would still be a mountain of materials to read through!

If a student were about to start a thesis on a particular subject he/ she would first perform a literature review on the topic. In order to do this you need to visit the library, search the Internet and search for every possible published paper or article relating to the subject matter of your thesis.

You then consolidate all the information into one single fully referenced essay on the topic. This helps not only define your work, it brings you into contact with other people who have already conducted research on the same or a similar topic. The last thing you also want to do is research a topic and publish a thesis on it only to find someone else has already done the same thing.

I many cases the title of the final literature review will not match the final title of the thesis.

Literature review is what you've read for the current essay. You can see how it's done right on essay-reviews for example. Basically, you just describe books and articles on the same topic your paper is.
