My guess is that having married into the wealthy bourgeois family David became Ad-Man for the third estates revolutionary agenda. Seriziat and others like him used David as their propagandist. The famous painting of Marat with its similarities to the story of Socrates's bath-tub, suicide are so contrived to glorify the Marat faction and cover the fact that Marat was most likely contracted to be murdered by a rival faction. The chaos ends with Napoleon, who was himself contracted by the third estate. Is it ironic that David, once counted as a liberal of the revolution is now the arch conservative, Noble of The Second Estate, Emperor of France, Napoleon Bonaparte's first painter. Is David a sycophant, or simply a Survivor just like Vigee LeBrun. Or maybe he just wanted to paint.
