The telegraph was the "talking wire" made by Samuel F. B. Morse (like Morse Code). It had Morse Code in it and sent messages through dots and dashes.

--

Telegraph was an early system of sending messages over long distances by by wire, however unlike telephone which reproduces a voice message the telegraph used the Morse Code of alternating short and long signals called dots and dashes. Each letter had its own dot-dash combination and the code could be deciphered at the receiving end so the message could be read.

--

Originally before we were able to send voice messages by telephone or radio, messages were sent through wire using code made up of combination of long beeps and short beeps that were known as Morse code. Sending a message in this way was known as sending a telegram over the telegraph system.
