Utah wanted to enter the union so that they could be equal with the rest of the americans. They wnet through many trials to become a state. The current government at the time was only willing to accept them if they would either be a slave state or cut down the size of it. Of course they didn't want any of these things so they eventually cut down the size and became a state in the late 18'00s.
