To magnetically hold programs and data files on a smaller and easier to get to system. WIthout a hard disk - you would have to run your system using only yhe CD's that it came with - and the CD's that all programs came with!!!

The hard disk/s on your computer is/are used to store all your programs, operating systems, and personal files. When you turn off your computer, it's RAM memory becomes empty. When you turn it on again, all the information required to establish a working system (including all your own records or files) is copied from your hard disc into your computer RAM memory and you can then proceed to carry out your normal computer activities.
