At the turn of the Century, Imperialism started to decline. It wasnt as prominant as it was during the early 19th century when France had Napoleon, England and Spain had foreign lands. It started to decline as the colonies once ruled under the European's imperialistic rule, started to declare independance.

The study of European imperialism during the late 19th century reveals that the world's major powers were able to extend their sphere's of influence over weaker nations with a good deal of success. The only major problem developed when Imperial Japan and Imperial Russia both had intentions in Eastern Asia that collided with one another. This resulted in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904. That conflict clearly elevated Japan to "world power" status. Most observers had expected Russia to win that war, however, it was japan that carved out a clear advantage over Russia.
