That is a question that you will get numerous answers too. There are many good waxes out there. I personally use McGuires products and love them. Wax is a protectant, and if used reguarly they are all good. Some just go on easier and protect longer than others. An alternative to wax is Acrylic paint conditioners, which are better for acrylic paints than waxes. Pure liquid non abrasive and self leveling, conditioners are absorbed into the paint. They make the paint stronger as opposed to covering it up with a wax built up.
Acrylic paint will give the best look. U can use water color also.

Any paint and decorating store should have little pads (like wet-wipes) that you rub onto the painted surface. Whether or not the paint rubs off will tell you what kind of paint was originally used.
