Barzun's famous quote, "Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of Amercia had better learn Baseball ..." is found two-thirds of the way down page 159 of his book, "God's Country and Mine: A Declaration of Love Spiced with a Few Harsh Words," Boston: Little, Brown and Co., 1954. You can believe this. Since the book has no index, and it is simply split into four sections (one for each season, starting with spring), I had to go find the book in a large university library and page through all 158 preceding pages to find the quote in order to cite it accurately in my Encyclopedia of Journalism entry on Sports Journalism -- Michael Dorsher, Ph.D., 2008-09 Fulbright Scholar Visiting Chair in Media at McGill University, Montreal, Canada.
