Jan Cartensz was a Dutch explorer who was commissioned to continue the exploration of the southern part of Gulf of Carpentaria which had begun with the Duyfken under William Janszoon. Cartensz nearly discovered the passage between Cape York and New Guinea, but was turned back by adverse winds.
