The Canadian Constitution is a product of Trudeau and the Liberal Party. He, effectively, wrote it and included all provisions he wanted. A better question might be what changes did he make or accept. The answer to that is very few.

Canadians, particularly those outside of Quebec and Ontario, were allowed little input to the Constitution unless they agreed with the Constitution creators.

The provisions Trudeau most wanted was increased Federal powers over the provinces and economy and less power and rights for Citizens. Many view the Charter of Rights and Freedoms to be Trudeau's compromise to get the added Federal powers and added Ontario and Quebec powers which include veto power over changes should the majority of the members in Confederation not agree.

What is an advantage of a strict contructionist?

Life is simple for them. That is the advantage. They are unwilling to accept that the world has changed over the past 200 years and are not willing to compromise. They want to accept that the US Constitution was written as if delivered on stone tablets. They do not want to see that change can be good. The original Constitution accepted slavery and made provisions for how slaves were to be counted for state representation in the House of Representatives. It is a flawed POLITICAL document. Drawn up during a time of compromise.

Did the original Constitution Out Law Slavery?

Although there was discussion about abolition during the drafting of the constitution, I am not aware of any provisions prohibiting slavery in any of the drafts of the constitution. No, it was later modified after the civil war.
