Physical activity helps to burn calories. A person will lose weight when he/she burns more calories than he/she takes in, so physical activity, such as walking, jogging, Bowling, playing tennis, etc., is a good way to burn extra calories. On the other hand, if a person is trying to gain weight, either more food should be eaten, or physical activity should be scaled back a bit so that more calories are taken in than are being burned.

It mainly helps by speeding up your metabolism which in turn helps your body burn calories at a faster rate. It also burns calories as energy and when your body uses this energy it either takes it from you fat or muscle, which in turn you lose mass. You do not have to exercise to lose weight however. Eat less calories a day then you put out (burn up), and you will ALWAYS lose weight. This is generally around 2000/day
