I wouldn't be so worried about the heads as the pistons. Make sure you have enough clearance so that an open valve won't hit a piston.

You can reset it to factory specs and it will run fine, but a little more timing (2-4 degrees) will probably run better.

You can just pull out the old one and put in a new one. However, I've used the Comp Cams 292, and it wants more compression, more gear, and a looser converter than stock.
Torque for 292 head bolts is 95 ft lbs
