New Netherland was comprised of more than one state. Henry Hudson claimed the territory for the Dutch. It encompasses parts of the states of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Connecticut, and Delaware.

When originally settled by the Dutch, New York City was called New Amsterdam.At that time, New Netherland referred to the settlement of the east coast by the Dutch which includes what today is now New York State, New Jersey, Delaware, and Connecticut.
