You can take the city buses. Depending on which entrance/exit you use, you will exit Penn Station on 8th Avenue (the west entrance/exit) or 7th Avenue (the east entrance/exit) at 33rd to 34th Streets.

Walk east one or two blocks to 34th Street and 6th Avenue, and get on the Uptown m7 bus.

Take the m7 bus to 86th Street and Amsterdam Avenue. At 86th and Amsterdam, transfer to the eastbound m86 crosstown bus to 86th Street and Fifth Avenue. From there it's just two blocks south to the Met, at 84th Street and Fifth Avenue.
