I run my pump three times a day early in the morning mid day and in the evening I do this so that the surface of the water is skimmed before most of the dirt and dust has the opportunity to sink before it is skimmed. This method makes even more sense if you are using a floating skimmer. if you are using automatic pool vac it is a good way to prevent blockages as a result of overloading.
I have good results running my filter for two hours after midnight (power rates are lower in my area from 10 pm to 6 am) and twice during the day. I use a timer and try to hit when my kids are in the pool or just left it because the water/debris is all stired up then. I still clean the pool with a manual vacuum twice a week.
It depends on how you deal with algae - if you use a floatron or similar device which cleans the water using mineral oxidation, then you only need to run the pump for a couple of hours a day, just enough to add a trace of chlorine and to filter debris from the pool. It also depends on how much use the pool has - oils and sunscreen will make the water cloudy, as will lots of rain, so you may need to add a little more chlorine or run the pump for a bit longer for a few days until the water is clear again.
I have a above ground pool from wal-mart 15 foot round 4 foot deep metal frame. How many hours a day should I run the filter pump?
Also can I buy a more powerfull pump that want tear the pool up?
I run mine at the hotest time of the day , ie 2 pm,
The important thing here is , you have to see when the water comes to the tank. Then only can you put the pump on.
Install a new filter
Probably not going to be adequate.

Proper water chemistry instead of neglect. Long filter periods and a clean filter.
It should be on "FILTER"
Absolutely. Many people excacate and then place an above ground pool into the hole such that a foot or two stays above ground. Also make sure you either have clearance for your filter system or run the line into the ground and up to the filter as well.
about an inch below the TOP of the filter...there should be a line on your filter...
I do think that you need to change the Filter. It not suppose to be brown. You can buy them at any pool store in your area or retail store that sells pools.
Yes. Running the pool filter pump while swimming has no adverse effects to the swimmers.
