Any type of 3D or "intense" graphical software, requires a lot more memory, than for say, a Word processor. For the iPod or mobile device, most 3D Games or Apps take up a lot of space.

What does zipping a file do to a file?

Zipping compresses the file so that it takes up less space on the disk drive.

How does a disk defragmenter work?

When a computer saves a file to disk, it looks for the first piece of unused space (not necessarily a space big enough to save the file !). On finding empty space, it attempts to save the whole file. If the space is too small, it saves as much of the file that will fit, then searches for some more space until it's saved the entire file. This creates fragments of the file on the disk, which are linked by a 'tag' so the computer knows where each part of the file is. Having to search for fragments of a file can make a computer seem slow, as it has to wait for the hardware to find the pieces of the file before it can do anything with it. A disk de-fragmenting program collects all the 'pieces' of each file, copies them to memory, erases them from the disk, then re-writes the whole file to disk in one single piece. Regular de-fragmenting speeds up the computer, by reducing the time it takes to find each file.

Does all file in a folder stored in the same area of a disk?

No. File systems can become "fragmented", meaning that not all space is allocated contiguously. When a file is deleted, the space it occupied is marked as being available for future use. When a new file is created, the first available free space is used before free space elsewhere on the disk.

Could there be complete files in unallocated space?

Yes - when you delete a file from Windows or any other system, it just informs the computer to mark that specific area where the file as free/unallocated space in the file table (a list of file names and where they are located in the disk to help your computer keep track of them) of your disk. Likewise with formatting a disk, it just wipes the volume with a completely new file table. This means that the data still remains on disk even though the computer no longer identifies that space as data. Because of this, this is generally why people say if you want to recover something after a accidental deletion, do not do anything that writes data to the disk as you may accidentally overwrite the areas that contain the data that was to be recovered.

What is Disk de-fragmentation?

Put simply - it's the breaking up of a file into pieces so it can be saved to disk. When you save a file, Windows simply looks for the first available free-space on the disk. It then saves the file - whether it will fit or not. If the file fits the free-space - end of story. If the free-space gets filled before the file is saved, Windows looks for the next available chunk of free-space and saves what's left of the file. The computer repeats the process until the entire file is saved. Defragmentation - is a small program that uses existing free-space on the disk to 'join' all the fragments of a file together, before saving the file as one complete 'chunk'. If you have a lot of files on your hard-drive, it's a good idea to run defrag on a regular basis - that will help speed up the time the computer takes to process files.

What is the procedure to compress a file?

An electronic file can be compressed so that it takes up less disk space for easier sharing by using one of several file compression softwares. WinZip, WinRAR, 7-Zip, PKZip, StuffIt are some of the most common softwares. The procedure for compressing a file depends on the software used but generally it is menu driven from the software and is done just by the click of the computer's mouse.

What is Memory space?

Computer memory works like this: a hard disk etc. is devided up into little packets. Let's say that file one takes up one packet, file two takes up two, and file three takes up three. The disk could then be diagrammed like this: 1-2-2-3-3-3. Then, you delete file two and install file four, which takes up four spaces. A computer always tries to keep files together. The disk can now thus be diagrammed like this: 1-4-4-3-3-3-4-4. This means that to access the second half of file four the computer has to cross all of file three, which makes it slower. That is fragmentation.
