One of his comrades later wrote that he was a skiver, who always tried to stay at Headquarters and avoid the action, and only gained his Iron Cross by pulling strings.
His role in the army was most significant just after the war, when he gave pep-talks to defeated troops, assuring them that they hadn't been defeated, only stabbed in the back. These pep-talks attracted bigger and bigger audiences, and formed the basis for the Nuremberg rallies.
