Lennon came from a broken home; his father left home when he was 2 and social services moved Lennon to be brought up by his aunt Mimi in a middle class suburb of Liverpool.

McCartney's father was a cotton salesman and his mother a midwife.

George Harrison's father was a bus driver.

Ringo's father left home when Ringo was a child, his family were bakers.

Although The Beatles were characterised (occasionally by themselves) as working class lads, only Ringo was actually born into working class poverty.

What is noticeable is that John, Paul and Ringo all had "difficult" childhoods - John and Ringo's fathers both deserted their children, John and Paul's mothers both died young - creating a bond between John and Paul that made them extremely close friends.

The Beatles started as a band called The Quarrymen, with teenagers John Lennon, George Harrison, and Paul McCartney joined in in July 1957. They originally had Stuart Sutcliffe with the band too, but Sutcliffe died. After Sutcliffe, there was Pete Best, the original drummer. But after a while, the other Beatles didn't like him and fired him.

They hired Ringo Starr (born Richard Starkey) as the drummer. At first, they were a small band in Liverpool, England. But after a while, they went to Germany and played at the Top Ten Club in Hamburg. It was there that they were found by Brian Epstein. The Beatles signed a contract with EMI and started singing in England again.

Their big break came in 1964 when their plane landed at JFK airport on February 7th, 1964. The rest, as they say, is history!
