Historically, he traveled to India and lived there between 629-645 learning to read Sanskrit, the original language of Buddhism. He then brought back over 600 sutras that were not available in China at the time. He worked on translating them until his death in 664.

In fiction, he traveled with his supernatural disciples Sun Wukong the Monkey King, Zhu Bajie the lecherous pig demon, and Sha Wujing the loyal water demon to India to retrieve Buddhist Sutras from the Buddha. He brought them home to China where he performed a ceremony that released untold souls from the torments of hell. He and Monkey become Buddhas at the end of their pilgrimage as a reward for their sacrifices.
