Under the Federal Meat Inspection Act the federal government authorized inspectors to visit all food plants.
This was paired with the Pure Food and Drug act which made it illegal to sell adulterated or mislabeled food and drug products, and it directed the U.S. Bureau of Chemistry (which was a precursor to the FDA) to inspect products and refer offenders to prosecutors.
Although Sinclair wrote The Jungle for the purpose of promoting socialism, it's real effect was to make the public aware of and keep them thinking about the issue of unsanitary meat processing plant. In an interview with Cosmopolitan magazine, Sinclair griped "I aimed at the public's heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach." Theodore Roosevelt, the President at the time it was published, generally considered Sinclair a crackpot because of his socialist rhetoric. (With respect to Sinclair) Roosevelt wrote to one of his friends "I have an utter contempt for him. He is hysterical, unbalanced, and untruthful. Three-fourths of the things he said were absolute falsehoods. For some of the remainder there was only a basis of truth." Nevertheless, the allegations of the book were significant enough for Roosevelt to send a team to inspect the meat packing plants in Chicago. Even though the owners cleaned up the plants before the team arrived, the remaining evidence was so appalling that the report from the team (along with public outcry from others who read the book) helped make the passage of the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act all but inevitable.
The publication of "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair in 1906 exposed the unsanitary conditions in the meatpacking industry and led to the passing of the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act in 1906. These regulatory laws aimed to improve food safety standards and protect consumers from contaminated or mislabeled products.
