the idea that we currently have of economy does not translate at all to nations in the time of the byzantine empire, however, they did have silk road trade and had to buy a lot of grain from North Africa after losing that. Over time it began to steadily decline as its empire did until it was completely destroyed in 1452. It did include trade with Russia and Scandinavia as well, but because of the Great Schism, it did not include Western Europe, although Western Europe at that time had no economic prosperity whatsoever (it's not called the dark ages for nothing)
