The average age of a British frontline soldier at the outbreak of WW1 was 29 years old indicated from conscription records (age range 18-41 {1916}). By 1917 the average age went down to 26.5 years old as the younger generation were brought up inclined to fight for Britain and had little to no workplace experience whereas the older generations already held stable employment in valuable industries crucially needed for the war effort.

It could be said that men fighting in the major trench warfare varied in age from 17-45 (1917 conscription ages) with individuals of all backgrounds, class and age group (teens, young adults, even young grandfathers in their 40s & 50s).

Battle of the Somme (1916)

Total British Casualties - 350,000 - 450,000

Average age of British soldiers at time - 27/28 years old

Average age of Kia at Somme - 22 years old

Average age of injured at Somme - 24 years old

% of casualties 21 or below - 37%

This shows that either young soldiers were mostly used in trench warfare as opposed to older individuals OR younger soldiers were more foolish, inexperienced and expendable.

It's hard to determine actual figures for trench warfare specifically and it doesn't help that military figures are often recorded inaccurately either accidentally or deliberately.

Given that boys as young as 14/15 enlisted secretly with minimal checks it is likely that a large proportion of those in the trenches were in their teenage years and sent straight to the frontline. While the average age of a soldier in 1916 was 27.5 years I, as well as most other WW1 Historians would suspect the average age was actually far lower.

The average age of death in World War I ranged from 19 to 25 years old, with many young soldiers in their late teens and early twenties losing their lives in the conflict. The war resulted in a significant loss of young lives due to the large number of soldiers involved and the brutal nature of the fighting.

The average age of the enlistment in World War 1 was 23 years of age. So many young men lost their lives on those battlefields almost an entire generation was lost.
