The TET offensive was a gross violation of a holiday cease fire agreement. The Communists believed that an offensive would be reinforced by a popular uprising within South Vietnam. The uprising never occurred, because the South Vietnamese understood what the results of establishing a Communist Dictatorship would be.

The result was the effective destruction of the Viet Cong (VC) within South Vietnam and the decimation of the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) units in South Vietnam. Many members of the VC were identified and eliminated in the ensuing combat.

The Communist failed to maintain control of any South Vietnam cities, with the exception of Hue, which they held for almost a month before US Marines recaptured the city. The NVA was unable to mount another major operation until 1972, which also failed.

Another result of the TET offensive victory for the Army of the Republic of South Vietnam (ARVN) was the beginning of withdrawal of US troops. The US Marines withdrew in 1969, and by 1972 all major US combat units had left the country. The ARVN were effective in deterring the Communists for for the next six years, with US air assistance.

TET caused the Communists to shift their focus from military victory to political victory. Assisted by their allies in the US media and the Democratic party, they were able to turn a large section of US public opinion against the war and cut off funding to South Vietnam. By 1975 their Soviet allies had rebuilt the NVA and the ARVN was running out of bullets.

The South Vietnamese signed the Paris Peace Accords in 1972 because they were promised US assistance to match that of Soviet Bloc countries and China. After the resignation of President Nixon removed all opposition, the Democrats in Congress effectively ended that promised assistance and directly led to to the fall of South Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. This resulted in the deaths of millions and the imprisonment of hundreds of thousands in reeducation (Concentration) camps.
