The first province settled was Newfoundland (ironically, the last province to join Canada) by the English in 1583 (the oldest permanent English settlement in the Americas). This was followed by Nova Scotia at Port Royal in 1604 (although it was then abandoned for 30 years) and Quebec in 1608. European settlement in Ontario was sporadic from the 1680s throughout the 1700s, and included the French, Britons and United Empire Loyalists.
That's the history of Eastern Canada.
The west was settled starting in the very early 1800s in Manitoba and moving west, but then starting on Vancouver Island in the 1850s and moving east. The last province settled was Alberta, which really came into its own until the turn of the 20th century.

The last Province to join Canada was Nunavut in 1999. ======================================= Nunavut is not a province. Nunavut is a territory. Other than the temporary Norse (Viking) settlements at the tip of Newfoundland's Northern Peninsula around the year 1000, the first European permanent settlement in Canada occurred around the year 1610 on the Isle of Newfoundland. It is generally believed, however, that several Europeans wintered in Newfoundland from time to time prior to 1610. These were men associated with the fishing fleets that frequented the Grand Banks. The Province of Newfoundland and Labrador entered Confederation on March 31, 1949.
English is spoken in Canada from coast to coast. In the province of Quebec there is not as much of it.
