The Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1 into a low earth orbit on October 4, 1957. It transmitted signals that were picked up by amateur radio operators throughout the world. The signals continued for 22 days until the transmitter batteries ran out on October 26, 1957. Sputnik 1 completed about 1400 orbits before burning up on January 4, 1958 as it re-entered the earth's atmosphere.
