New Jersey has a strong Governor, who is the only public official elected by the entire state, except for US Senators. The Governor has the power of chief executive, Legislative agenda setter, appointments (even to the judiciary) to cabinet, policy support, investigatory and semi-autonomous bodies which are rampant in New Jersey, partly because of the bi-state arrangements with bridges, tunnels, airports with New York and Pennsylvania.
The New Jersey Governor has a difficulty with access to the media, which is dominated by its metropolitan neighbors, Philadelphia and New York City.
The Dutch lost their hold on the New World to the British around 1664. About that time, the British took control of the approximate area that is now New Jerseyand added it to their other colonies in America. They divided the land in half and gave control to two "Proprietors", as they have been referred to historically: Sir George Carteret (who was in charge of the east side) and Lord John Berkley (who was in charge of the west side). The land was officially named New Jersey after the Isle of Jersey in the English Channel, because Carteret had been governor of the Isle of Jersey. Once the "proprietors" took control of their shares, they sold bits and pieces of them to settlers. Some time later, after the Proprietors had sold the land to others, Great Britain simply took back control of the area except now it was inhabited by colonists.
