A typical Mayan famiy would consist of 5-7 people, they would rise before dawn, breakfast on Hot Chocolate or a thick, hot corn drink called Atole. served with tortillas or tomales. The men [in the growing season] would tend the crops or hunted for deer or other small animals. The women would stay close to home and prepare meals, grind corn, weave baskets, tend to the deer herd, sew and look after the children. The boys would go with the rest of the men and be taught how to tend the crops or learn to hunt. The girls would stay with the women and learn household tasks. At the end of the day the whole family would gather for the evening meal, which would consist of corn, squash, beans and meat[deer, rabbit, turkey]. Before the meal was eaten the head of the household [with the help of his wife] might perform a blood letting ceremony accompanied by prayers and chanting. Then the family would eat and might talk of up-coming events and day to day happenings.
