Author and Oz series originator Lyman Frank Baum [May 15, 1856-May 5, 1919] begins the book with the explanation that the farmhouse in which Dorothy lives with Uncle Henry and Aunt Em is the middle of the great Kansas plains. Towards the end, the city of Omaha is mentioned. But that's in Nebraska, which is the home state of the Wizard of Oz.
