Bombay (now known by it's Indian name of 'Mumbai') became capital of a unified India under the British Empire until Edwardian times, when the British transferred the capital to Delhi. This has remained India's capital ever since. So just consult a map of India to see it's other cities- none of these ever were India's capital.
