The war was in full progress by the time Nixon was elected. He wanted to get America out of the war as soon as possible with a peace with honor campaign. Most of the country by that time had tired of the war and the thousands of American lives lost or ruined. SO, his task was a difficult one at best. I was there and frankly I think he did very well. America had never lost a war but he knew we really had no hope of ever winning in Vietnam. So he ordered massive bombing raids and increased the pressure on the Vietnamese to get them to peace talks. It took awhile but it finally was resolved and our prisoners of war were released.
