John Hancock was a prominent merchant in Boston, known best by the people of the time as a smuggler, mainly of tea. He was admired by many, but his biggest accomplishments were in what he did as a patriot: aiding the Sons of Liberty, particularly Samuel Adams, and later becoming the governor of Massachusetts.
He was elected to the Boston Assembly in 1766.
He was elected to the Stamp Act Congress at the same time as the Boston Assembly in 1766.
By 1773 he was both a delegate and the president of the Provincial Congress of Massachusetts.
In 1774 he was elected to the Continental Congress.
The next year following the retirement of Peyton Randolph became the president of the Continental Congress.
He was the first to sign the Declaration of Independence.
Following his retirement as the President of the Continental Congress due to problems with gout he was elected as the first Governor of Massachusetts.
He served as the governor through his death in 1793.
