With Henry's support, Portuguese explorers travelled down the west coast of Africa. But they did not reach the Cape of Good Hope until 1498, 38 years after Henry's death.

Sagres Point [Ponta de Sagres] was a favored point of departure for sailors because it offered safe shelter for ships awaiting favorable winds.
