Manifest Destiny was the term used to describe the idea in the United States, beginning in the 1840s, that the US was destined to expand from ocean to ocean and all of North America from north to south. It developed, in part, from a great surge of nationalism (patriotism) following the War of 1812, as the nation expanded west. Because of our economic and political superiority, and due to the rapid growth of our population, and because it was God's will, our superior civilization should take over the others on the continent, according to the theory. In 1845, John L. O'Sullivan wrote an article about the annexation of Texas and first used the term, manifest destiny.
America could, and should, continue to expand westward at all costs.
Expansionists who saw the concept of Manifest Destiny as a reasonable goal for the US. Democrats interested in territorial expansion, especially for cotton agriculture.
The term manifest destiny has been various moments throughout the history of nations. Manifest Destiny portraits the divine plan of a countries, nations, or even individual's predetermined future in greatness.
Manifest destiny meant that it was the God-given right for Americans to settle the land from sea to shining sea. It was the "responsibility" of Americans to gain the valuable natural resources that the land had to offer. Manifest Destiny took place from about 1820-1860, and then Homesteading began. Americans moved west from all different lifestyles, places, and even countries to obey "God's Command", to pursue religious freedom, and sometimes just to do something new, daring, exciting, and adventurous. The new settlers migrated mostly in covered wagons called "Prairie Schooners". The men, women, and children walked most of the time to help save the oxen's strength. Pioneers endured harsh conditions and left behind their former lives to pursue manifest destiny. Although there are many accounts of the hardships that the settlers faced, they were causing hardships for another group of people. The Native Americans had to face new diseases and new people on the land that was always theirs. They were forced off of their land so that manifest destiny could be continued. Manifest destiny was helped along by the Oregon Trail, the Railroad, Mountain Men, The Independence of Texas and the war with Mexico. What the people involved in manifest destiny did so long ago has helped shape who we are as a country today.

The White Americans gave a peice of land to the Native AMericans so they had to stay on their land and their land only. The belief that the land was rightfully theirs was enforced by the idea of manifest destiny. (coined by John O'Sullivan in 1845). An extremly brief definition of Manifest Destiny is the idea that the Americans had a God given right to the land from the Native Americans. ALthough pioneers had started moving west before the idea arrived, it was the driving force behind the idea of the White Americans as the superior being.

In simple terms, ManifestDestiny was the idea that Americans were destined, by God, to govern the North American continent. This idea, with all the accompanying transformations of landscape, culture, and religious belief it implied, had deep roots in American culture.
The phrase used to express the conviction of settlers to rule as much of North America as they could was manifest destiny. This phrase and the meaning behind it was used to justify the war with Mexico in the 1800s.
Its simple. If authority to expand territory comes from an authority no one can be higher than, God, then that becomes the justification to take all the territory desired since it is Gods mandate. This is a fallacy of course, but, never the less, a long held policy by conquering armies.
