The Muslim rulers after prophet Muhammad death in year 632 AD were called Caliphs. The first Caliph was Abou Bakr. The Caliph after death of the Caliph Abou Bakr was Omar Ibn Al-Khattab. That is why he was the second Caliph.

The first four Caliphs are all informed by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) that they are promised by God to among ten prophet Muhammad companions who to be accepted the God Paradise in their 2nd life. Also, the four have close relations to prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) married the daughter of each of the first two Caliphs. The third Caliph married the daughter of prophet Muhammad and when this daughter died he married the other daughter. The fourth prophet married Fatima (may God be pleased with her) the youngest daughter of the prophet.
These individuals as a group are known as the SAHABA or Apostles of Muhammad. The regime that they founded was called the RIGHTLY-GUIDED CALIPHATE or RASHIDUN CALIPHATE.
The first four Caliphs are the most trusted followers of the holy Prophet (SAW) who were elected by the majority vote of the holy Companions RA of the holy Prophet (SAW). For this they are called the Khulafai Rashideen.
The Sunni's believe after Muhammad's death, he left his followers with his book Quran and the culture. They also had 3 ''khalifahs'' after Muhammad's death. The Shiites believe after Muhammad's death, he left his followers with his book Quran and another follower that gave guidance, Imam Ali.That was later on that the shiites formed the doctrine of Imamat. Hazrat Ali (RAU) expressed his pact of obedience (BA"AT) to the three Rightful Caliphs and acted as an active counsel/advisor to them. He was the Fourth Rightful Caliph. He never claimed that the first three were not Rightful Caliphs. He was not a coward to keep this in his heart and serve the first three rightful Caliphs.
Not all the Caliphs are the true successors of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). Only first FOUR Caliphs are called Rashidoon - the Rightful Caliphs. Unfortunately, the caliphs after Hazrat Ali RAU didn't follow the teachings of Islam in letter and spirit. They can't be called the Rightful Caliphs.
The first four Caliphs after Muhammad, more commonly known as The Rightly Guided Caliphs were Abdullah ibn Abi Quhaafah (known by his nickname, Abu Bakr), Umar ibn al-Khattab, Ali ibn Talib and Uthman ibn Affan, in this order of succession.
as u know that there were four caliphs after hazrat Muhammad ( P B U H )wen there is no leader the unity is broken so after longfights the first caliph hazrat abu bakar sidduiqe razitallah anah was made r first caliph or in other words : The death of Muhammad in 632 created confusion in the nascent Muslim community, for Muhammad had left no details as to who should succeed him. After a heated discussion by the senior members of the community, Abu Bakr was selected as the first caliph.
The first Rashidoon Caliph Hazrat Abu Bakar RAU was elected the highest leader of the Muslims after the death of Hazrat Muhammad SAW. He liked to be called as Khalifa -tur - Rasool. After him, Hazrat Omar RAU and the succeeding Rashidoon Caliphs were given the title: Amir-ul-Momineen.
