The Bronx was first settled by Europeans in 1639 when Jonas Bronck, for whom the area was later named, established a farm along the Harlem River in the area now known as the Mott Haven section. The territory now contained within Bronx County was originally part of Westchester County, an original county of New York State. The present Bronx County was contained in four towns: Westchester, Yonkers, Eastchester, and Pelham. In 1846, a new town, West Farms, was created by secession from Westchester; in turn, in 1855, the town of Morrisania seceded from West Farms. In 1873, the town of Kingsbridge (roughly corresponding to the modern Bronx neighborhoods of Kingsbridge, Riverdale, and Woodlawn) seceded from Yonkers. Brooklyn is the most populous of the five Boroughs of New York City with about 2.6 million inhabitants. An independent city prior to 1898, Brooklyn developed out of the small Dutch-founded town of "Breuckelen" on the East River shore of Long Island, named after Breukelen in the Netherlands. Were it still a city, and not a borough, it would be the fourth-largest city in the United States after New York City itself, Los Angeles and Chicago. Despite being part of the City of New York, Brooklyn in character is its own city, as opposed to the Bronx which historically and characteristically could be better described as a northern extension of Manhattan, or southern extension of Westchester County. Brooklyn (along with Queens) is located on the western-most end of Long Island. The name Manhattan derives from the word Manna-hata so written earliest in the 1609 log book of Robert Juet, an officer of the Dutch East India Company yacht Halve Maen or Half Moon. The ship was captained by Henry Hudson, who, in the service of the Dutch Republic, was (covertly) commissioned to seek a Northwest Passage to China. The Half Moon first entered Upper New York Bay on September 11, 1609, and sailing up the lower Hudson River, anchored off the tip of northern Manhattan that night. As emissary of Holland

Manhattan - The name Manhattan comes from the word Manna-hata, which means "island of many hills" in the Native American Lenape language. The term was noted by European settlers as far back as 1609, in the log book of an officer on one of Henry Hudson's yachts. It also appeared on maps around that time.

Brooklyn - The local Dutch settlers dubbed this area Brooklyn back in the 17th century, naming it after the town of Breukelen in their home country (the Netherlands). Today, the city of Breukelen, Netherlands has about 14,600 people, while Brooklyn, New York is home to nearly 2.6 million.

The Bronx - The Bronx was named after the Dutch settler Jonas Bronck, who established a farm in the area in 1639. Technically, today's Bronx wasn't named after the farm itself, but was named after Bronck's River (now Bronx River), which splits the modern-day borough in two.

Queens - Queens County, which covers the same area as the borough, was presumably named after the Queen of England at the time, Catherine of Braganza, the Portuguese wife of King Charles II.

Staten Island - Staten Island got its name in 1609, when Henry Hudson established Dutch trade in the area (Hudson was English, but he was employed by the Dutch East India Company). He named the island Staaten Eylandt after Staten-Generaal, the Dutch parliament. In fact, Dutch explorers named a lot of places Staten Island, but none became as famous as New York's.

What are the names of some of the New York City Boroughs?

There are five boroughs in New York - Manhattan, The Bronx, Staten Island, Queens, and Brooklyn. I am not certain as to why the city was divided into these areas. They were separated into 5 boroughs because they were each separate pieces of land that were owned by different people. They weren't part of New York City, only New York State, originally. The consolidation of the five boroughs into "Greater New York" in 1898 was a very early example of regional planning. The contiguous counties of New York, Richmond (Staten Island), Brooklyn and The Bronx (an annexed portion of then Westcheter County and Queens County (not all of the county wanted to join the consolidation and formed Nassau County while the remainder of the county joined the city.

Were there ever six New York City boroughs?

No. New York City consisted mostly of just Manhattan until the five boroughs were incorporated in 1898.
