Elijah Muhammad had numerous affairs, and several of them resulted with children. Although this doesn't seem to be that bad, Muhammad was preaching at the time that you should swear yourself to celebacy until you're married (like most religions) and also said you should have affairs. These aren't a rumour, as they were true. It is thought that Muhammad also asked Malcolm X to help him cover it up, who refused and subsequently quit the Nation of Islam
