There were four - slings, arrows, javelins, and simply throwing rocks by the auxiliary troops. Each hoplite (armourd warrior) brought a slave as his light infantry contribution and as a servant out of battle. The Spartans brought seven serfs for each hoplite (2,100 accompanied the 300 at Thermopylae and died with them).

1. Archery, was an additional unit developed by the ancient Greeks to enhance the phalanx battlefield formations;
2. Slings were also used as missile tactics; and
3. Javelin units were used to destroy enemies who were within 100 yards of a Greek army.
