You probably have a door sensor out, they detect whether or not the doors are closed, so the car thinks a door is open. It is a little button that gets pushed in by the front of the door by the hinges. They are cheap and easy to replace.
There are no lights. their just reflectors.

I must assume you are talking about the back up lights you have to do it from inside the tailgate. you must remove the whole interior panel to get to it.I took it to the dealer and paid 60 bucks

In a 1997 Lincoln Continental : To the right of your headlight switch in the dash is a ( panel dim ) switch I believe if that is turned all the way up then the interior lights will come on
I would check your alternator*(check the spelling).
Do you mean that the lights inside go on and off as you drive? If so, the problem might be the door switches. They control the interior lights and sometimes get gummed up. Spray WD40 in the door latches and open/close the doors a few times. This usually fixes the problem. Good Luck!
