The first documented showing before an audience of a motion picture with reeled film and electric light was in 1894 in Richmond, Indiana. The inventor of the Phantoscope, a prototype of the movie projector, Charles Francis Jenkins patented the projector shortly after.
While some sources say it was Thomas Edison who did it, most scholars believe two brothers from France, Auguste and Louis Lumiere, did it before him-- there is evidence the Lumiere Brothers demonstrated their moving pictures in 1895.
