There are no automatic duties for an ex-president. What he does depends on his health, his age and his inclinations. Some take an active interest in politics, others more or less bow out. Some, e.g. VanBuren, T. Roosevelt, Fillmore and Cleveland run for president again. Taft got appointed to the Supreme Court. A. Johnson was elected US Senator and John Q. Adams became a Congressman.
