The Phoenician civilization came from the so called "people of the sea", of unknown origin, that arrived in ships, first in the region that today is Palestine and Israel, about 20 centuries b.c. and, by conquering the land from the Egiptian's. founded a kind of state that later derived into the Filistins. Centuries later, part of this people moved to the north, and conquered from the hitites the region that correspond today to Lebanon and founded the Phoenician civilization. The Phoenicians were a Semitic people who moved from the east to settle in Lebanon and western Syria.

The name 'Phoenician' was given to them by the Greeks - derived from their word phoinicus for the purple dye for which it was famous.
