Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinborough visited seven Canadian provinces during the Royal Tour of November, 1951: Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and Alberta.

Their itinerary included watching an Edmonton Eskimos football game at Edmonton's Clark Stadium. My father was a co-captain of the Edmonton Eskimos at the time. He and a few other players were presented to Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinborough at a ceremony during half-time of the game.

My father had the audacity to blurt out to Princess Elizabeth, "Hi-ya Queenie. How're ya doin'?" Her Majesty was not amused.

An open-air procession had been scheduled for the following day, to view the Royal Couple as they made their way to the airport. The planned route passed right by our front door.

All Edmonton school children had been given flags to waive and a half day off to watch the procession. About 15 minutes before the Royal Couple were scheduled to pass in front of us, the heavens opened up and we were deluged. The Royal Cadillac had been fitted with a clear plastic roof but, when they passed, it was raining so hard that we saw nothing of them.

Perhaps the gods were punishing us for my father's indiscretion.

The Queen's first visit with official engagements was on 12 October 1957, when Her Majesty opened the 1st Session of the 23rd Parliament of Canada.
