As soon as history began being recorded. Prehistoric simply means that nothing was being recorded. For instance, the prehistoric era ended in parts of ancient Mesopotamia about 3000 BCE, while an undiscovered tribe that exists right now (and there are some, particularly in the Amazon) would still be considered prehistoric.
