No, that means there is a problem with the emmissions system. Have the computer scanned for the error code. Do not continue to drive without getting this fixed. You can damage the converter or other parts. It's probably because of the Mass Air Flow. They're all faulty on the 2002 Passat. It happend to me, but it should still be under warranty so you won't have to worry about paying for it. Even though having a dealership just look at your car is like $90. But Good Luck! Don't drive it if the the light is flashing. If it isn't don't lose your hair over it, but get it checked out within the month. It can mean the sensors on or around the filters are bad. I have drove with mine on for quit some time with no problems. I went out and purchased a diagnotic tool for about 80.00 and you can reset it. It could also be that your gas cap has not been closed properly (funny but true!). Check this first as an easy fix that can save you money, time, and embarassment. The check-engine light might not go back off right away, so give it a little driving time to see if that was all that was amiss.
